'On the Narrow Gauge ':

Narrow Gauge Railways & the Lincolnshire Area of the

Narrow Gauge Railway Society

(Information on narrow gauge preserved railways to follow.)

This page has been 'under construction' for too long. Suffice it to say that I have been involved in narrow gauge railways for many, many years. My first introductions to the narrow gauge were to the gravel pit railway at Burton Fen, near Lincoln and the ironstone tramways at Greetwell, and to the industrial scene at Newsum's joinery works on the Fosse Dyke in Lincoln (featured on the front cover Eric Tonks' book on Ruston Locomotives). In those days, fifty years ago there was also open access to the Docks at Boston, Lincs., and it was on Sunday visits to these that that I first experienced the 'potato railway' at Nocton. Notes on other lines in the 'West End' of Lincoln and 'Newsums' are available. Whilst they are not narrow gauge they are not narrow gauge there are some interesting diagrams of Lincoln's railways in the 1950-59 period, These show the extensive system of 'industrial' lines in the City at that time.

I have worked as a 'Traffic Volunteer' (Guard) on the Talyllyn Railway (Mid-Wales) for nearly foryy years. On my journeys to Tywyn I have often stopped to visit my friends on the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway, and my involvement with the smaller gauges has led to me being Secretary of the Lincolnshire Area of the Narrow Gauge Railway Society. Although not a member I am happy to support the work of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Society, and some of my pictures appear on their site ( > Photo Index). A web page is offered by our member Graham Lighfoot. New to me is Steve Thomason's 'Industrial Narrow Gauge Railways' website, and I'm pleased to add the site for the Golden Valley Railway

The Lincolnshire Area of the NGRS (generally) meets on the 2nd Wednesday of alternate months at the 'Unison Club', Beaumont Fee, Lincoln, LN1 1UL, with a start time of 7.30pm. We offer a range of events that we hope is of interest to all interested in narrow gauge and minor railways. Our 2008 programme is given below.

The Area Group had for many years a 'Newsletter': This is the last edition to be published.

For some thoughts on the transport scene in the East the linked article may be of interest.

The following letter was received in 1909 by the Divisional Office, Sahebgunj, West Bengal and shows some of the 'joys' of travelling by rail in India.

'Dear Sir,

I am arrive by passenger train at Ahmedpur Station and my belly is too much swelling with jackfruit. I am therefore went to privy. Just as I am doing the nuisance the Guard making whistle blow for train to go off and I am running with 'Lotah' (waterpot) in one hand and 'dohti' (loin cloth) in the next when I am fall over and expose all my shockings to man and female women on platform. I am got leaved at Amedpur Station. This too much bad, if passenger go to make dung that dam guard not wait train five minutes for him. I am therefore pray you honour to make big fine on that guard for public sake. Otherwise I am making big report to papers.
