{"id":344,"date":"2019-07-25T16:17:49","date_gmt":"2019-07-25T16:17:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.photrek.co.uk\/wordpress\/?page_id=344"},"modified":"2020-02-29T11:24:10","modified_gmt":"2020-02-29T11:24:10","slug":"a-profane-but-very-true-poem","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.photrek.co.uk\/?page_id=344","title":{"rendered":"From the sacred to the profane, but very true poem &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>The Dream of Wearing Shorts Forever, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2019\/may\/01\/les-murray-obituary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Les Murray (opens in a new tab)\">Les Murray<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> To go home and wear shorts forever<br>in the enormous paddocks, in that warm climate,<br>adding a sweater when winter soaks the grass, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nto camp out along the river bends<br>for good, wearing shorts, with a pocketknife, <br>a fishing line and matches\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>or there where the hills are all down, below the plain,<br>to sit around in shorts at evening<br>on the plank verandah &#8211; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the cardinal points of costume<br>are Robes, Tat, Rig and Scunge,<br>where are shorts in this compass? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are never Robes<br>as other bareleg outfits have been:<br>the toga, the kilt, the lava-lava<br>the Mahatma&#8217;s cotton dhoti; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>archbishops and field marshals<br>at their ceremonies never wear shorts.<br>The very word<br>means underpants in North America. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shorts can be Tat,<br>Land-Rovering bush-environmental tat,<br>socio-political ripped-and-metal-stapled tat,<br>solidarity-with-the-Third World tat tvam asi, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>likewise track-and-field shorts worn to parties<br>and the further humid, modelling negligee<br>of the Kingdom of Flaunt,<br>that unchallenged aristocracy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More plainly climatic, shorts<br>are farmers&#8217; rig, leathery with salt and bonemeal;<br>are sailors&#8217; and branch bankers&#8217; rig,<br>the crisp golfing style<br>of our youngest male National Costume. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most loosely, they are Scunge,<br>ancient Bengal bloomers or moth-eaten hot pants<br>worn with a former shirt,<br>feet, beach sand, hair<br>and a paucity of signals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scunge, which is real negligee<br>housework in a swimsuit, pyjamas worn all day,<br>is holiday, is freedom from ambition.<br>Scunge makes you invisible<br>to the world and yourself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entropy of costume,<br>scunge can get you conquered by more vigorous cultures<br>and help you notice it less. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be or to become<br>is a serious question posed by a work-shorts counter<br>with its pressed stack, bulk khaki and blue,<br>reading Yakka or King Gee, crisp with steely warehouse odour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Satisfied ambition, defeat, true unconcern,<br>the wish and the knack of self-forgetfulness<br>all fall within the scunge ambit<br>wearing board shorts of similar;<br>it is a kind of weightlessness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike public nakedness, which in Westerners<br>is deeply circumstantial, relaxed as exam time,<br>artless and equal as the corsetry of a hussar regiment, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>shorts and their plain like<br>are an angelic nudity,<br>spirituality with pockets!<br>A double updraft as you drop from branch to pool! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideal for getting served last<br>in shops of the temperate zone<br>they are also ideal for going home, into space,<br>into time, to farm the mind&#8217;s Sabine acres<br>for product and subsistence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that everyone who yearned to wear long pants<br>has essentially achieved them,<br>long pants, which have themselves been underwear<br>repeatedly, and underground more than once,<br>it is time perhaps to cherish the culture of shorts, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>to moderate grim vigour<br>with the knobble of bare knees,<br>to cool bareknuckle feet in inland water,<br>slapping flies with a book on solar wind<br>or a patient bare hand, beneath the cadjiput trees, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>to be walking meditatively<br>among green timber, through the grassy forest<br>towards a calm sea<br>and looking across to more of that great island<br>and the further tropics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>On Mountains<\/strong> &#8230;  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to see mountains again, Gandalf,  mountains, and then find somewhere where I can rest. In peace and quiet,  without a lot of relatives prying around, and a string of confounded  visitors hanging on the bell. I might find somewhere where I can finish  my book. I have thought of a nice ending for it: and he lived happily  ever after to the end of his days.\u201d     <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> I think in his heart, Frodo&#8217;s still in love with the Shire; the woods,  the fields, little rivers&#8230; I&#8217;m old, Gandalf. I know I don&#8217;t look it,  but I&#8217;m beginning to feel it in my heart. I feel thin, sort of  stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread. I need a holiday, a  very long holiday. And I don&#8217;t expect that I shall return.
