Convoy models – Introduction – page under construction: 01/01/2026
Suffice it to say that I started collecting small scale (1/1200 & 1/1250) model ships in 1960 – the earliest purchases were ‘Minic’ (1st [UK] series) and ‘Eagle’/’Eaglewall’. This early period of collecting reached a ‘high-point’ in the mid-1960s when I started converting – a conversion of the Minic HMS Bulwark to HMS Hermes immediately springs to mind. Time moved on: there were the traumas of looking for a job, and then time at college, and the realisation that I was an ‘outdoor person’. In the mid-1970s I became aware of two manufacturers who became well known in that period: W G (Bill) Gilpin – a wonderful, if slightly eccentric, schoolteacher from Glasgow, who produced as ‘Clydeside’
